"Mystic Goat" is the fourth painting in the Visual Rituals series.
The goat is among humanity's oldest companions and one of the most enduring symbols found throughout myth, ritual, and prehistoric imagery. In this work, the animal appears not as a literal creature but as an archetypal presence — a messenger moving between the natural world, memory, and imagination.
Inspired by prehistoric cave art, petroglyphs, ritual symbolism, and altered states of perception, the painting presents a luminous goat suspended above a living network of roots and branches. Symbols, animals, celestial forms, and ancient visual marks inhabit the body of the goat, transforming it into a vessel of memory and a landscape of signs.
The composition explores the relationship between animal consciousness, human imagination, and the living world. The tree-like structure beneath the goat resembles roots, rivers, neural pathways, and mycelial networks, suggesting hidden systems of connection that bind all forms of life together.
Throughout human history, animals have occupied a central place within mythology, ritual practice, and artistic expression. From prehistoric cave paintings to ancient ceremonial traditions, they have served as guides, companions, messengers, and embodiments of forces larger than the individual self. "Mystic Goat" draws upon this enduring relationship, presenting the animal as both a physical being and a symbolic bridge between visible and invisible worlds.
The body of the goat functions as a container of symbols and stories. Petroglyph-like figures, spirals, animals, celestial motifs, and ritual markings appear within its form, suggesting that memory itself can inhabit living beings and travel through generations. The surrounding stars, spirals, and solar imagery place the creature within a larger cosmic landscape where earth, life, and sky remain interconnected.
Created with layered mark-making, UV-reactive paints, glow-in-the-dark pigments, iridescent and metallic paints, the painting exists in multiple visual states. In ordinary light, under ultraviolet illumination, and in darkness, different layers of the composition emerge. Iridescent and metallic elements respond to movement, light, and viewing angle, creating an additional perceptual dimension that continuously alters the visual experience of the artwork.
When displayed with a programmed breathing UV light (sold separately), the artwork gradually shifts between states of visibility, causing symbols, forms, and colors to emerge and recede over time. This creates the sensation that the painting itself is breathing, transforming the work from a static image into a living visual experience.
"Mystic Goat" continues the Visual Rituals series' exploration of consciousness, ritual, memory, and humanity's ancient relationship with the animal world. It reflects the idea that animals are not separate from human culture and imagination, but have always been part of the symbolic language through which humanity understands itself and its place within nature.
