"Son of the Sun" is the ninth painting in the Visual Rituals series.
The title refers to one of humanity's oldest realizations: that all life on Earth is ultimately born from the sun. Every forest, river, animal, plant, and human being exists within a vast chain of energy originating from a single celestial source. The painting reflects this ancient relationship between life and the solar forces that sustain it.
Inspired by prehistoric cave art, petroglyphs, ritual symbolism, and altered states of perception, the composition presents a circular solar form surrounded by a radiant network of branching structures. The image resembles a sun, a living cell, a seed, an eye, and a ceremonial shield simultaneously, merging natural and symbolic worlds into a single visual language.
At the center appears an archetypal face emerging from within the solar disk. Eyes gaze outward while a vertical axis runs through the composition, connecting above and below, sky and earth, light and matter. The figure is neither an individual nor a deity but a symbolic expression of humanity's participation in the larger processes of nature.
The surrounding network of branching forms resembles roots, rivers, lightning, neural pathways, plant growth, and fungal networks. These radiating structures suggest the movement of energy through living systems and reinforce the idea that all forms of life remain connected through common origins. The sun becomes both a physical source of life and a symbol of consciousness illuminating the world.
Throughout human history, solar symbols have appeared across cultures as expressions of vitality, renewal, creation, perception, and transformation. Long before modern science explained the role of the sun in sustaining life, people understood its significance through direct observation and symbolic imagination. "Son of the Sun" draws upon this ancient visual tradition while reinterpreting it through a contemporary language of prehistoric-inspired symbolism.
The circular structure also echoes one of the recurring themes throughout the Visual Rituals series: the relationship between center and expansion. Just as roots spread outward from a single source and branches extend from a tree, life itself unfolds from common origins into countless forms. The solar disk becomes a symbolic center from which the visible world emerges.
Rather than portraying the sun as a distant celestial object, the painting presents it as an active presence within life itself. "Son of the Sun" suggests that every living being carries traces of this ancient inheritance — that the same energy flowing through forests, rivers, animals, and stars also moves through human consciousness.
Created with layered mark-making, UV-reactive paints, glow-in-the-dark pigments, iridescent and metallic paints, the painting exists in multiple visual states. In ordinary light, under ultraviolet illumination, and in darkness, different layers of the composition emerge. Iridescent and metallic elements respond to movement, light, and viewing angle, creating an additional perceptual dimension that continuously alters the visual experience of the artwork.
When displayed with a programmed breathing UV light (sold separately), the artwork gradually shifts between states of visibility, causing symbols, forms, and colors to emerge and recede over time. This creates the sensation that the painting itself is breathing, transforming the work from a static image into a living visual experience.
"Son of the Sun" concludes the first cycle of the Visual Rituals series, bringing together recurring themes of consciousness, nature, ritual, memory, perception, and humanity's connection to the living world. It reflects the idea that beneath the diversity of life there exists a shared source — a common origin linking all beings through the same cosmic process.
