"Wild" is the seventh painting in the Visual Rituals series.
The title refers to a state of being that exists beneath social roles, cultural conditioning, and the structures of civilization. It points toward the untamed dimension of human experience that remains connected to instinct, intuition, nature, and the living forces from which humanity emerged.
Inspired by prehistoric cave art, petroglyphs, ritual symbolism, and altered states of perception, the painting presents a human figure whose body appears rooted in the earth while simultaneously reaching toward a larger field of awareness. The figure stands between underground and celestial realms, functioning as a bridge between instinct and perception, matter and consciousness, earth and sky.
At the center of the composition is a spiral contained within the head of the figure. The spiral is among humanity's oldest symbols and appears throughout prehistoric art across the world. It evokes growth, transformation, movement, cycles, and the unfolding patterns found throughout nature. Here it functions as a symbolic center of awareness emerging from a deeper, more primal relationship with existence.
The roots extending from the figure's body suggest that human beings remain connected to the same living systems that sustain forests, rivers, animals, and ecosystems. Rather than standing apart from nature, the figure grows from it. The branching forms surrounding the body resemble roots, vegetation, neural pathways, and mycelial networks, reinforcing the idea that life is woven together through countless visible and invisible connections.
Above the figure appears a great eye containing a spiral. Throughout human history, the eye has symbolized perception, vision, awareness, and insight. In this painting it represents a broader field of consciousness toward which the figure reaches. The eye and the human form are connected through a living pathway resembling both a plant stem and a ceremonial axis, linking perception to the deeper foundations of life.
The composition draws upon recurring symbolic patterns found across cultures and throughout time. Human figures, spirals, birds, eyes, roots, and ritual markings appear as elements of a shared visual language that humanity has carried for thousands of years.
Rather than portraying wildness as chaos, the painting presents it as a fundamental state of connection. "Wild" suggests that beneath modern identities there remains an ancient relationship with the living world — a relationship rooted in direct experience, intuition, participation, and belonging.
Created with layered mark-making, UV-reactive paints, glow-in-the-dark pigments, iridescent and metallic paints, the painting exists in multiple visual states. In ordinary light, under ultraviolet illumination, and in darkness, different layers of the composition emerge. Iridescent and metallic elements respond to movement, light, and viewing angle, creating an additional perceptual dimension that continuously alters the visual experience of the artwork.
When displayed with a programmed breathing UV light (sold separately), the artwork gradually shifts between states of visibility, causing symbols, forms, and colors to emerge and recede over time. This creates the sensation that the painting itself is breathing, transforming the work from a static image into a living visual experience.
"Wild" continues the Visual Rituals series' exploration of consciousness, ritual, memory, and humanity's relationship with nature. It reflects the idea that wildness is not something outside of human beings, but an essential part of what we are.
