"You Are Nature" is the fifth painting in the Visual Rituals series.
The title expresses one of the central ideas explored throughout the series: humanity is not separate from nature but an expression of it. The work challenges the illusion of division between human beings and the living world, suggesting that the same forces that shape rivers, forests, animals, stars, and landscapes also flow through human life.
Inspired by prehistoric cave art, petroglyphs, ritual symbolism, and altered states of perception, the painting presents a symbolic vision of interconnected existence. At the center stands a luminous hand marked by a spiral, two of humanity's oldest and most enduring symbols.
The hand functions as both a personal signature and a universal reminder of humanity's enduring relationship with the natural world. Handprints and spirals are among the oldest known symbols created by human beings and represent some of the earliest forms of visual art. Found in prehistoric caves, rock shelters, and sacred sites across the world, these ancient marks continue to appear throughout human history as expressions of presence, identity, memory, movement, and transformation.
In "You Are Nature," the hand and spiral come together as symbols of humanity's connection to the living world. The hand represents presence and participation, while the spiral evokes growth, cycles, evolution, and the unfolding patterns found throughout nature. Together they suggest that human beings are not separate from the natural world but expressions of the same creative forces that shape life itself.
Surrounding the central form are animals, ancestral figures, celestial symbols, trees, fire, and ceremonial imagery drawn from prehistoric visual traditions. These elements are not presented as separate subjects but as interconnected expressions of a single living system. Human beings, animals, plants, earth, and sky appear as participants within the same continuous process of life.
The spiral embedded within the hand symbolizes growth, transformation, cycles, and the unfolding movement of consciousness through time. Emerging from a ceremonial fire below, the hand rises like a vision, memory, or revelation, connecting the earthly realm with the symbolic world of myth, ritual, and imagination.
Throughout the composition, recurring archetypal forms appear as visual echoes of humanity's oldest attempts to understand existence. Handprints, animals, solar symbols, and ritual figures have accompanied human culture for thousands of years, serving as reminders of a time when people experienced themselves as participants within nature rather than observers standing apart from it.
Rather than depicting a specific mythology, the painting draws upon universal symbolic patterns that appear across cultures and throughout history. "You Are Nature" invites the viewer to reconsider the relationship between self and world, suggesting that the boundary between the two may be far more fluid than it appears.
Created with layered mark-making, UV-reactive paints, glow-in-the-dark pigments, iridescent and metallic paints, the painting exists in multiple visual states. In ordinary light, under ultraviolet illumination, and in darkness, different layers of the composition emerge. Iridescent and metallic elements respond to movement, light, and viewing angle, creating an additional perceptual dimension that continuously alters the visual experience of the artwork.
When displayed with a programmed breathing UV light (sold separately), the artwork gradually shifts between states of visibility, causing symbols, forms, and colors to emerge and recede over time. This creates the sensation that the painting itself is breathing, transforming the work from a static image into a living visual experience.
"You Are Nature" continues the Visual Rituals series' exploration of consciousness, ritual, memory, and humanity's place within the living world. It reflects the idea that nature is not something external to be observed, but the larger process from which human life itself emerges.
